Welcome to the website of Middlesbrough Environment City (MEC). We are a registered independent charity that works across Middlesbrough to promote and encourage healthy and sustainable living. We hope that you will take this opportunity to look through our website and will be encouraged by the wide range of activities taking place.
Middlesbrough Environment City was formed in 1992 and became an independent charity in 1997. We work closely with Middlesbrough Council, and other partners from the public, voluntary, community and private sectors, to deliver a diverse range of projects each year, including food growing, energy efficiency, cycling and outdoor play, using the One Planet Living approach.
In the current economic climate, it is more important than ever to ensure the prudent use of resources and enable our residents to play an even greater part in our communities. Here at Middlesbrough Environment City we use the innovative ‘One Planet Living’ approach to describe sustainability and our impact on the earth’s resources. If everyone on the planet lived in the way we do in the UK we would need three planets to sustain us all. The challenge is to bring our use of resources down towards on planet, ensuring a sustainable future, whilst maintaining quality of life for all. One Planet Living helps residents to save money, enables communities to make a positive contribution to their local area and improves Quality of Life for local people. Middlesbrough is one of only three local authorities in the country to be accredited as a One Planet Region by international charity Bioregional. We are also pleased to announce our support for the recently created North East of England Climate Coalition (NEECCo), England’s first regional climate coalition that has been created to tackle the climate emergency, reverse ecological collapse, and deliver an urgent and just transition.
