About

There are many public sites across Middlesbrough where fruit trees and fruit bushes are growing, yet the majority have not been appropriately maintained and managed and are in need of pruning, maintenance and a bit of tlc.

The aim of the Community Patchwork Orchard project is to bring more free, fresh and healthy fruit to the people of Middlesbrough.

It will do this by:

  • mapping fruit trees where people can access easily and safely for their own use
  • harvesting and distributing surplus fruit to the people who need it most
  • helping people learn to look after their own trees and those near to them
  • creating new areas of patchwork orchard for future communities

You can help:

  • Tell us when you find a fruit tree so that we can note it on the map
  • Learn new skills – help care for trees and harvest fruit
  • Let us know about communities that could benefit from free, healthy food
  • Share what you know – show others what to do and support them to gain skills

We also have lots of other opportunities for volunteering. Advice, support and training, will be provided. Training will include pruning and maintenance of trees, and healthy cooking skills using produce from the orchards.
